How to overcome impostor syndrome and become the Leading Lady of your life.
That nagging voice in your head whispers: “You don’t belong here. They’re going to find out you’re a fraud.” Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. That voice has a name – impostor syndrome – and it’s time to silence it forever by writing a new story for your life.
What is impostor syndrome?
Impostor syndrome is the persistent feeling that you’re inadequate, incompetent, or fraudulent despite clear evidence of your achievements and qualifications. It’s that internal critic convincing you that your success is due to luck, timing, or deception rather than your actual abilities and hard work.
The term was first coined in 1978 by psychologists Dr. Pauline Rose Clance and Dr. Suzanne Imes, who specialised in studying high-achieving women. Their groundbreaking research revealed something profound: even the most accomplished women often felt like intellectual frauds, despite overwhelming evidence of their competence.
Why women bear the heavier burden
Whilst anyone can experience impostor syndrome, research consistently shows it affects women disproportionately. Even the most successful women in the world aren’t immune to this internal critic.
Academy Award winner Kate Winslet has spoken openly about feeling like “a bit of a fraud” despite her incredible career spanning decades. She’s admitted to feeling that her success was somehow undeserved, even after winning an Oscar.
Emma Watson, despite her global success from Harry Potter to becoming a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, has confessed: “It’s almost like the better I do, the more my feeling of inadequacy actually increases.”
Viola Davis, the first black woman to achieve the triple crown of acting (an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony), has shared how she constantly questions whether she belongs in Hollywood’s elite circles.
Meryl Streep, with 21 Oscar nominations and three wins, once said she thought people would realise she “can’t act” before each new role.
Nicole Kidman, Oscar winner and one of the world’s highest-paid actresses, has openly discussed her struggles with self-doubt throughout her career, admitting she often questions whether she deserves her success and worries about being “found out.” Even after five Oscar nominations and one win she still struggles with self-doubt. What hope is there for normal working women?
These powerful examples from women at the pinnacle of their careers illustrate why impostor syndrome affects women so deeply:
Societal conditioning: From childhood, women are often praised for being “good” rather than “smart” or “capable.” This creates a foundation where we question our abilities rather than trust them.
The confidence gap: Studies show that women typically need to feel 100% qualified for a role before applying, while men apply when they meet just 60% of the criteria. We’ve been conditioned to doubt ourselves.
Perfectionism trap: Women face higher standards and harsher criticism for mistakes. This creates a perfectionist mindset where anything less than flawless feels like failure.
Representation matters: When you’re often the only woman in the room, it’s easy to feel like you don’t belong. The lack of female role models reinforces the feeling that success is an exception, not the norm. Just look at how many women are running the world in 2025.
Cultural narratives: Society still tells stories where women are supporting characters, not the heroes of their own journeys. These narratives become internalised, making us question our right to lead and succeed. 113 countries have never had a female head of state. There is a long way to go to break even.
The power of story: Your path to freedom
Here’s what I’ve discovered in my years as a storyteller and story mentor: impostor syndrome isn’t about your abilities; it’s about the story you’re telling yourself.
Every successful woman I’ve worked with has faced this challenge. The difference between those who break through and those who remain stuck isn’t talent, luck, or circumstance. It’s the story they choose to believe about themselves.
As your story mentor, I’ve seen firsthand how transforming your internal narrative transforms your entire life. When you learn to craft and tell your story with intention, authenticity, and power, something magical happens:
- You stop waiting for permission to claim your space
- You recognise your achievements as earned, not accidental
- You see challenges as plot points in your success story, not evidence of your inadequacy
- You become the author of your life, not a character in someone else’s story

Why this approach works
Traditional advice tells you to “fake it till you make it” or “just be more confident.” But you can’t think your way out of impostor syndrome, you must story your way out. A great story is like a life raft, you can hold onto while you build your confidence.
When you understand that you’re not an impostor but rather a woman whose story has been shaped by cultural conditioning and limiting beliefs, everything changes. You realise you have the power to rewrite that story.
The storytelling principles I teach aren’t just creative exercises, they’re tools for life transformation. When you apply narrative structure to your own experience, you:
- Gain clarity on your true strengths and achievements
- Develop unshakeable confidence in your abilities
- Create a compelling vision for your future
- Build the courage to take bold action
- Inspire others through your authentic story
The kicker is… you must do the work. Change only happens when you take the car out of neutral and put it into drive. Action trumps feeling stuck, fighting low confidence and impostor syndrome.
